Good Fit
After over 50 years in the ready-to-wear business, I have concluded that women have several reasons for selecting a garment: style, color, fabric, size, or price. All of these are important, but most important is fit.
There is no standard size scale. Manufacturers decide their own size scale for themselves. For example: Many upscale lines sell a lot of size 4s and 6s. In moderately priced lines, these sizes would correspond to 8 to 12. A few lines cut ample. Alfred Dunner, a well thought of brand, a woman that normally wears a size 16 will fit nicely in a size 14. One of our Southern Lady brands which cuts true to size is good for the slightly taller miss.
To get a good fit, the most important things is to fit the shoulders. If the shoulders do not fit, the garment will not look or fit right.
Words of wisdom ...

A good fit” is vital
The moral to my store: Give us a chance to fit you.
We’re good at it.
If we can’t fit you, we will tell you.
Many years ago, a young lady from Alaska came into my cost and jacket store in Serramonte Center, Daly City. She had just been to the leading department store in the Center looking for a size 18 coat for herself. They did not carry size 18 and dismissed her. I replied that we did carry size 18 but would she let me fit her. I sold her two nice size 16 coats, and she went our very satisfied. My point: the department store had a lot of size 16 coats including the two that I sold the happy young lady from Alaska and could have “fit” her.
