Christmas is the perfect time for sharing, so I would like to share a couple of items with you today.
Around the holidays, I bring some of my sugared walnuts down to the store for our customers to sample. The walnuts have been very well received, and many people have asked for the recipe. Sugared walnuts are rather simple to make and do not require too much time. Here is my recipe for your pleasure:
Spiced Walnuts
from "San Francisco A La Carte, A Cookbook"
1/4 Cup water
1/8 teaspoon Cream of Tartar
1 Cup Sugar
1 1/2 Cups Walnut Halves
1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon Vanilla extract
Bring the water to a boil. Add the sugar, cinnamon, and cream of tartar. Stirring occasionally, boil to 240 degrees on a candy thermometer. Remove from heat and add nuts. Stir in vanilla and continue stirring until all nuts are coated and mixture has sugared completely. Remove the walnuts and arrange in a single layer on a cookie sheet. Cool for one hour and store in an airtight container.
Makes 2 half-pint jars.

In my many years in the retail business, I have encountered a lot of interesting and funny stories. Here is a special one:
Years ago when I had a ladies' coat store in Daily City, California, a lovely elderly women was shopping for a coat. She told me "I will never buy another white coat!". When I asked her why, she replied, ":Every time I fall down, it gets dirty!" I had to agree that was a very good reason --- don't you think?
