I was watching my husband out in his garden the other day. He has almost finished spring planting and is getting ready for fall planting. The thought struck me that if we as women apply the same steps he does in his gardening to our wardrobes, we could easily acquire a suitable wardrobe fit for almost every occasion.

FIRST you plan. You know what you wear around the house, so that is easy. It is more important for you to keep in mind the special places you will go this year --- a trip, a cruise, a graduation, a wedding, and always church. A look in your closet will tell you what you will need to buy to get though this year. Don't wait until the day before the wedding to look for that perfect outfit.

SECOND you plant (purchase). If you plan far enough ahead, you may find what you want on sale. Not only can you save money buying ahead of time at out-of-season sales, you eliminate stress. Keep in mind that sale goods usually consists of broken sizes and slow selling merchandise. If you need to match colors, bring a sample with you --- memory does not serve well. You will probably have to settle for a color that blends rather than specifically matches. If you find just the perfect outfit and it is not on sale, buy it regardless. You will not be satisfied with anything less.

You will always be prepared if you following this advice. This works for me. I call it Investment shopping.

THIRD care of your garden (wardrobe) is important. Don't just "throw it in the washer," follow the care directions on the labels. Pruning or weeding out fashion mistakes in your wardrobe is also wise. However, some seasons are longer than you might realize, i.e. a patriotic theme of red, white, and blue can be worn from Memorial Day, Fourth of July, through Labor Day.
